About WoodCalc

WoodCalc is a free set of calculators for people who plan their own wood projects — the homeowner measuring a wall before buying studs, the hobbyist cutting a first set of cabinet doors, the weekend warrior pricing a deck before calling a contractor.

Why this site exists

Almost every material-sizing mistake in woodworking comes from one place: nominal lumber sizes. A "1×6" board is actually ¾ inch by 5½ inches. A "2×4" is 1½ by 3½. Any calculator built on the nominal name overstates coverage by 8 to 9 percent, and over a whole project that difference is dozens of boards and a second trip to the lumber yard.

WoodCalc was built on a simple rule: every calculation runs on real milled dimensions, and results are rounded up to units you can actually buy. You cannot purchase half a bag of concrete. A number that does not tell you what to put in the cart is not a useful number.

What you'll find here

How we handle the details

Code and safety. Calculators that touch structural work — joist spans, deck framing, stairs — show the standard referenced value and state plainly when a plan does not pass. They are estimating references, not engineering. Anything load-bearing should be confirmed by a local building official or a structural engineer, and permitted where required.

Units. North American construction is imperial, so output is imperial first. Paint and firewood also convert to metric, because a surprising share of DIY search traffic comes from outside the US.

No accounts, no tracking of your numbers. Every tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.

How WoodCalc is funded

WoodCalc is free to use and funded by affiliate commissions. When you buy something through a link on this site, we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the numbers in a calculator and never affects which tool or product we recommend. Our full affiliate disclosure lists every partner.

Who runs WoodCalc

WoodCalc is built and maintained by Jian Yuan, a woodworking hobbyist and self-taught web developer based in Weihai, China. The site started as a personal spreadsheet for estimating deck materials and grew into a public tool set after friends kept borrowing it.

Every calculator is written and tested by hand against published lumber standards and span tables. There is no scraped product data and no automatically generated filler. When a formula is uncertain, the page says so instead of guessing.

Messages to [email protected] reach the person who actually writes and maintains these tools — no support queue, no bot replies.

Corrections

Estimating formulas get revised as lumber standards and building codes change. If you find a number that is wrong, we want to know — tell us and we will fix it. Correct material math is the only reason this site exists.
